Trying to dominate your dog can be harmful to your dog and break down your bond between you and your dog.
Many books and TV shows have said your dog will dominate you and that you should become the "leader of the pack". This has come about from dogs evolving from wolves who form packs with a pack leader, which in turn has then gone onto suggestions that you do the same with a dog in your household.
We hope to educate owners on the theory behind this and present you with up to date research on how this is not the case. The impact of selective breeding has resulted in many of the behaviours and drives that wolves live by to be mostly disappeared in domestic dogs. Dogs may engage in behaviours that people perceive they are asserting dominance such as food guarding (food, toys). However, these are problems that can be brought under control by management and training and wont be resolved by owners trying to show dominance over the dog.
